Subcompact crossover segment isn’t the most popular at the moment, but it’s the fastest growing class without any doubt. Because of that, most of the car manufacturers are working on the new models that have to be better from the competition. One of the new but very interesting subcompact is the 2017 Honda HR-V. The crossover came all-new last year, but it’s already highly popular in North America.
2017 Honda HR-V: Design and Equipment
We must say that Honda made an excellent choice with the exterior design. No, the 2017 HR-V isn’t the most handsome subcompact at the market, but it largely resembles the bigger very popular CR-V, so the potential buyers immediately accepted the interesting bodywork.
The 2017 Honda HR-V rides on the same platform as the Fit hatchback, but gets nothing else from it. The front end design sports CR-V’s grille and headlights, while the rooflines feature coupe-like styling. This way, the subcompact looks more dynamic and sleek. On the other hand, the rear hatch isn’t too interesting. There are CR-V’s taillights and rather imperceptible bumper.
Inside, the interesting crossover exudes luxury. The cab is at least twice better from Fit’s. There are better-quality materials, as well as very clean dash design. As a matter of fact, the interior is very smartly arranged, so everything is on the right place.
In case, you choose some higher trim level, you will get a twice bigger infotainment touchscreen and a display for audio and safety systems. The base model includes pretty standard equipment like power windows, locks, and mirrors and AM/FM/CD audio with USB port. There is also tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, as well as Bluetooth and rearview cam. This model gets a 5.0-inch touchscreen, but there is an optional 7.0-inch screen too. Speaking of the options, the crossover may also have smartphone connectivity with Pandora audio and automatic climate control. There is a power sunroof and second USB port, while the front seats could feature heaters.
In the second row, the HR-V gets “Magic Seats” that folds and flips, so you get really big cargo room. For instance, the cargo gets only 25 cubic feet when the seats are up, while the folded arrangement provides the impressive space of 58.8 cubic feet.
Honda’s models are always very safe. The Japanese car manufacturer constantly improving the equipment, so it isn’t too surprising a five-star overall result in NHTSA testing. The 2017 Honda HR-V gets an impressive front and rear visibility, while the safety kit surpasses every single rival. There is standard rearview camera, and optional include LaneWatch, a right-side camera, as well as a wider-image rearview camera.
Performance and Fuel Economy
The US 2017 HR-V comes with single option under the hood. It’s a 1.8-liter inline-4 engine, which is capable to deliver around 141 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. You can choose between front- and all-wheel drive, as well as six-speed manual gearbox and CVT. The crossover earns really impressive fuel economy, especially with the front-wheel drive and the manual transmission. According to EPA, it’s rated at 25 mpg city, 34 highway and 28 combined. As for the FWD CVT model, it achieves 28/35/31, while the all-wheel drive and CVT stops at 27/32/29 mpg which is lower, yet still very good result.
And now comes the best part. The starting price of the 2017 Honda HR-V isn’t too high at all. The base model costs below $20,000, while the full-loaded model can reach $27,000. The crossover is already available at the car market, so what are you waiting for?
