Acura may be Honda’s luxury division, but it isn’t always the better choice. For instance, in 2014 the Japanese car manufacturer introduced the TLX sedan, which replaced both the TSX and TL. Now, the new car is pretty good, but it’s not the best option in the segment. Moreover, it’s far behind the biggest names such as Audi A4, BMW 3-series, Jaguar XE, or Mercedes-Benz C-class. For this year, they introduced the 2017 Acura TLX, which is refreshed, but not essentially changed.
2017 Acura TLX: Engine Options and Fuel Economy
The updated sedan offers two engine options, and it may sound absurd, but we strongly recommend you the base drivetrain. It’s a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine that delivers 206 horsepower and 182 lb-ft of torque and smooth shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. The power runs the front wheel only, but this isn’t any shortage at all, because the base 2017 Acura TLX seems very sharp and impressive on road. On the other hand, the “better” and more expensive model uses a 3.5-liter engine with 290 horsepower and comes with either the standard front- or optional all-wheel drive. Now, the V6 mill uses Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system, which is good, but not impressive. It also sports a nine-speed automatic gearbox that’s much worse option from the aforementioned 8-speed. Yes, it provides one more gear, but it’s also makes the car lazy and jerky.
The 2.4-liter engine also provides better fuel economy than the 3.5-liter unit. With the base TLX achieves 24/35/28 city-highway/combined, while the V6 with all-wheel drive stops at 21/31/25 mpg.
Average From Outside, Brilliant Inside
In contrast to pretty impressive performance, we can’t say that the 2017 Acura TLX looks gorgeous. The manufacturer made some changes for this year, but the car still looks rather average and outdated. Well, not exactly outdated, but this isn’t Acura’s best deal. Still, we can say that the front end looks decent thanks to the chromed shield-shaped grille and pretty narrow LED headlights. Altogether, the overall bodywork looks like this is some kind of coupe.
The interior is on the other hand very attractive and quite impressive. The cab features plenty of space for the compact sedan, so we can say it can easily compete with mid-sizers. Road noise doesn’t exist inside the 2017 TLX, so you will hear nothing without any doubt. In addition to nice materials and quite good infotainment system with easy-to-read instrument cluster and dual-screen center stack, the sedan also packs pretty good safety features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist.
Like we said before, the refreshed 2017 Acura TLX isn’t the best possible compact sedan at the moment, but this doesn’t mean that isn’t good at all. Moreover, with the base price of $31,900, you will get the some amazing stuff. And again, the range-topping trim that cost $45,740 isn’t something we suggest. It’s better to wait for the new generation TLX that comes in two or three years.
